Da Vinci Code – India’s I & B Ministry Wusses out for now

NDTV is reporting that India's Information and Broadcasting (I & B) ministry is holding back the release of the movie 'Da Vinci Code'. The Censor board of India, the regulatory body that controls what is appropriate material in a movie and provides appropriate rating to movies, has cleared the film. Inspite of that, the I & B is holding the release citing 'sensitive subject' as a reason. We already know that many christian leaders are opposed to the movie being released and many have petitioned the Indian government regarding the issue.

All i can say is that for a secular government to give in to this bullshit is beyond reproach. The movie is being screened in that prudest of all christian societies – the US, for heaven's sake (yeah, the irony of the term 😉 ). The government should not be the one to decide if a movie is touching sensitive issues. And esp not pander to vote banks. As long as the censor board clears a movie with the appropriate rating, it should be allowed to be screened. Let the people decide if they want to see it or not. I was happy when movies such as Deepa Mehta's Fire were allowed to be screened. But looks like we have taken a turn for the worse again.

I have decided to protest against all depictions of noodles/pastas and related foods ( Esp those darn Maggie Ads). If we do not raise against this blasphemy HE will not bless us with His 'noodly appendage'. RAmen !

Desi MJ Prabu Deva and reminiscions of simpler times

Sigh. 10th standard. wonderful times. Life was all about 'hakuna matata' – No worries for the rest of our days. Or so we all thought. This was, as far as this fragile memory of mine can recollect, the first time i had gone to see a movie with a group that did not contain my parents or any combination of the seemingly endless list of relatives. A bunch of guys in our class decided to go to this new tamil movie 'Kadalan'. It was in a neighbourhood theatre just a few blocks away from home. So i guess that was a factor in my parents letting me go. And this ranks as the first of the many (ok, few) fun episodes of my youth (Ah, my youth, wither goes thou (pun intended)).

Indian Micheal Jackson Prabu Deva (all the dancing with none of the child molesting 😉 ) sent waves of appreciation throughout TamilNadu with this movie. The guy could act, do comedy and boy 'o' boy could he dance! And this was Nagma's introductory role in Tam movies AFIAK. The video is of a song from this movie is of one the most fun songs i know of.

The real revelation in this video (and the movie) is SPB – S P Balasubramanian. He is a well known play back singer. Has innumerable songs in all the 4 south indian language movies. And many hindi movie too – notable for Salman 'I'll shoot all the deer i want to' Khan. And in this movie, in addition to lending his voice, he performs wonderfully. Be it comedy or be it the heavy scenes, he matches and exceeds prabu deva and the others. Watch him dance his way to your hearts – the perfect Hardy to Prabhu Deva's Laurel. And yes, i realise Laurel is the goofy one but once you see the video you will realise why i absolutely could not cast SPB as Laurel. My mind just would not allow that!

Watch Kadalikum Pennin Kaigal … and reminisce with me of simpler times.
